Lightbulb Ten Steps to Avoiding Email Scams - 11/25/08, 11:29 AM

According to the Anti-Phishing Working Group (APWG), email scams known as phishing attacks claim more than 2,000 victims each day from more than 75 million phishing emails that are sent each day. APWG also claims that these email scams steal close to $1 billion a year from its victims!

Protecting yourself against phishing and email scams:
1. Do not give out personal or financial information through an email request.
2. Always log on to your sensitive accounts by opening a new browser and typing the actual URL directly into the address bar. For example, if you receive a suspected phishing email from ebay, open a new browser and type "www.ebay.com" in the browser bar.
3. Do not click on any link in a suspected phishing email.
4. Do not open any attachments in a suspected email scam.
5. Only use a secure website to submit sensitive data. A secure sites' address will begin with https:// instead of http://
6. Check the activity of your online accounts regularly and check for fraudulent activity.
7. Make sure your browser is up to date and all security patches are installed.
8. Report phishing and spoof email to: reportphishing@antiphishing.com, spam@uce.gov, and forward the email to the company that is being spoofed.
9. Keep your PC protected with updated anti-virus software, anti-spyware software, and a firewall.
10. You may want to install an anti-phishing toolbar such as Earthlink ScamBlocker which alerts you before you visit a known fraudulent website. It's free and can be downloaded at EarthLink® Software & Tools - Do More

I just delete emails like that. If they want something… to bad. I’m not willing to give.

Question You mean, I'm not the LUCKY one..? - 11/30/08, 06:10 PM

Lol, well hey thanks man thats definitly some good advice, i couldn't say it better myself, and also if you just use as some good old logic in the thinking process (to those who are new to thinking), and think about who you're sending this information to...? and ask your self..? Do i really want to send my "personal" information to someone half way accross the world, where they know they can do as they please with it...! or whatever the case may be, I already know my answer is going to be, No,
(and of course hit the Delete on the e-mail!)
as tempting as that sounds i doubt there is some one looking to give me, you, him, her, anyone at that free money, because some one thinks they're going to be nicest person, by giving someone the opportunity to share their personal bank info for free money. That almost sounds too easy right..? and if the guy also mentions "winning" or "drawing". First think about it, if you entered a drawing to start with, thats usually the killer there. But yeh enough of me rambling on, im just sometimes surprised how many people get fooled? Seriously? like a fraud thing is going to tell you, their taking your money. But I'm not pointing at any one person specific here, but if you're the guy/girl wondering if im talking about you after reading this, (not the scammer But) the one that got scammed that is, then i might be, Deedeedee! (as carlos the comic would say) lol..

but seriously!
Thats my 2 cents!

Default do big interent websites sell email? - 12/17/08, 09:48 PM

I have many email address that i use for many different things. i have a personal one that i only use for freinds and important stuff like banks, bills, etc... Sometimes after making a account at some important place i get dozens of junk mail daily... You think wbsites sell emails oe they do it on their own? or my email is leaking through freinds?

Arrow Well, it depends.... - 12/18/08, 09:14 PM

What I've noticed with e-mail accounts places like MSN, YAHOO, and etc.. those places wether or not you use your e-mail, once you make it JUNK comes flowing in, i dont know how, but thats how its always been when i set-up an account, but places like G-Mail I've never had a problem, or like my e-mail through verizon when i had it... it was good too, no junk... but mostly because those places dont really have a way to search profiles, sometimes i believe its done by like crawl bots or spam users that go through the user searches and maybe get e-mails that way, ya know, buts just an idea let me know what you all think...!!

Default yea possible - 12/19/08, 04:13 AM

I guess theres many possibilities how people get hold of your email address.

But i still think people sell "active" emails to spammers.

Yesterday i got about 20 emails from the same person with the same email.... It really pisses me off, most of my emails come straight to my blackberry, it kinda anoys me... Ans the spam blocking doesnt really work for some reason.

My old yahoo emails have over 20,000 messages. I'm glad I have an e-mail with my own site now.
